Soup

I miss Portuguese food. I miss going to almost any restaurant and knowing that I’ll be able to get a nice soup and a nice steak, with some nice bread, for a reasonable price.

But the soup… that is what I miss the most. Everything is greasy or spicy here.

Perhaps I’ll have to go to Brixton and try one of the Portuguese restaurants that are supposed to be there. That would not be practical to do every day though.

Too bad I can’t make soup.

Hi Inayaili:

Being from Porto an having studied abroad (in Rotterdam), I know exactly how you’re feeling! Food outside of Portugal doesn’t taste the same. And from time to time, you really star missing that soup! (BTW, that’s a really typical restaurant table in the photo, where did you take it?)

Nevertheless, don’t despair. Just make yourself a simple pot of soup: Boil 2 potatoes, 1/2 an onion, a piece of pumpkin, (if you want you can add a carot), and near the end, use the magic wand (if you can, otherwise just cut everything in small bits), and throw in some cabbage (white one is better) to give it a bit of a scalding.

It’ll end up looking like the one you’ve posted and I guarantee it’ll make you feel better again… maybe a bit “saudosa” again!

Anyway, just dropped by to compliment you on this blog and specially on the CSS tips on Smashing Magazine.

Hey Pedro,

Thanks for the recipe, I may try it someday… soup’s not the thing I do best though.

The photo was taken in Belém, Lisboa, in a restaurant called Queijadas de Belém 🙂

I miss Portuguese food too : ) and I’m Italian and I just spent one year in Lisbon (erasmus student). The soupa was delicious…everything was delicious and cheap…I’m mean…Portugal is the only place in the world where I eat (tons of ) salted dried codfish…it’s so good…and fast food is pão pão queijo queijo : ). Yeah, I really miss Lisbon : )

Do you think it’s just the food you miss or the honest straight-forward approach to dining as well? No matter how often you do it, eating out in London is somehow always made in to an ‘event’. It’s intense, full of protocol, kind of hard work, and generally not that cheap. I still enjoy it, but it’s an altogether different experience to sitting down in a typical Portuguese restaurant.

The picture above makes me smile actually. I lived in Faro for 2 years a while ago and over that time learned to love what I guess it is you miss. I started off eating in all the touristy restaurants for the first 6 months, and over time was introduced to more local places with their soup to start and then fish for lunch or meat for dinner. 🙂

My favourite restaurant in the world still is one there called Adega Nova. It’s not quite your traditional low key restaurant and maybe it’s a bit touristy at times, but I had so many great evenings in there with friends. In fact on more than one occasion we would get a taxi straight from the airport there for lunch, then hang about drinking their garaffas de vinho tinto all afternoon, and finish of with a Bife Pimenta in the evening.

Give me that place any day, rather than poncing about in an over-blown, over-priced, uninspiring restaurant in central London.

Thanks for letting me reminisce in your comments!
